Message from the Southeast District

On February 14, 1946 at the Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of State President Elmira Smith (Draper), the City-Wide Ushers were organized.  George F. Hawkins, a Charter Member, was an inspiration and spokesman; he could have been known as “Mr. Usher.”  Due to his enthusiasm, the City-Wide Ushers came into being.  In 1947, the City Wide Ushers changed their name to “The Southeast District Ushers’, the Third Charm in the link of the Union Usher Board, State of California, Inc.

The first official slate of Officers was President M.K. Courts; 1st Vice President, Louise Hemphill; Secretary Johnnie B. Jackson; and Treasure, William J. Cooper.  The Charter Churches were Bethel A.M.E., Bethel Baptist, Calvary Baptist, Mt. Zion Baptist and Phillips Temple Church.
In 1950 The Young Adult Department was organized follow by the Junior and Youth Department in 1955. The continued blessing of growth allowed the Juniors and Youth Departments to separately organize in 1955. The Supervisor of the young People became the first to recruit and train our youth for competition.  The fields entered are: Vocal, Oratory, Piano and Essay in rotation

Our goal is to encourage, involve and inspire our young people to attain a full and richer life; assist in the achievement of some special goal or career, thus reaching the highest education standards possible.

Southeast District is proud to be a part of the Union Usher Board State of California, Inc. Our aim is to come together as one body with one objective to serve with efficiency and dignity.

Mozella Brown - Southeast District President
